Explained: Difference between Indica, Sativa and Hybrid Species
If you’ve ever smoked a joint, you know it’s worth it! And if you’ve ever read anything about the different types of weed, you’ve probably heard these three words: indica, sativa and hybrid.
If you have no idea what these three terms mean, don’t worry. Because we have all the answers you’re looking for.
In this short article we explain all the differences between indica, sativa and hybrid species in plain Dutch. So even if you’re not a medical student, you still get a good idea of what these terms mean.
Indica
Before we explain the indica species, let’s first look at the short history of cannabis types:
Long ago there were only 2 types of cannabis: “Cannabis Indica” and “Cannabis Sativa”. So all species were either 100% indica or 100% sativa.
After generations of hybrids, most species today combine the genetics of both indica and sativa. There are only a few pure varieties available on the market.
With this short history in mind, we come back to the indica kind.
Indica plants are usually shorter than both sativa and hybrid plants. They are also more stocky with wider and denser leaves. The plants do not need as much space as the other species.
Indica cannabis has a relaxing, calming and soothing effect that makes you feel like you’re floating in the air. Most of these types make you feel relaxed and excited at the same time.
The excitement doesn’t last long, but the deep relaxation does. Therefore, it is usually used at night to get a good night’s sleep.
Doctors often give indica weed for the treatment of:
Pain
Stress
Insomnia
Depression
Muscle spasms
Sativa
Sativa plants are the highest. They have thin, long leaves that look great in a garden. You need a lot more space to plant these species than indica and hybrid.
Sativa weed creates strong mental feelings that improve your mood and make you more focused. So of course they are usually used during the day.
In general, sativa species have the following 5 properties:
Against fear.
Increases focus.
Antidepressants.
Reduces chronic pain.
Increases the production of serotonin – a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of mood, sleep, anxiety, appetite and learning.
As we have said before, you should always smoke sativa during the day, because it gives you the following feelings:
Hungry
Focused
Creative
Talkative
Energetic
Hybrid
Hybrid are, as their name implies, combined species of both indica and sativa. Therefore, they have qualities of both indica and sativa. Therefore, we can use these species at any time of the day.
Hybrid species are almost always either indica-dominant or sativa-dominant – except in themwhenthe indica:sativa is balanced 50:50.
Now you know the difference between indica, sativa and hybrid species. We hope that the next time you come across one of these terms, you’ll already have a good idea of what they mean.
